As we make our way downstairs, the scent of bacon, eggs, sausage, and toast washes over me. It smells delicious, and I give Aurora a huge grin as soon as I see her.
"Good morning, boys." We grumble good morning in return. She hands each of us a plate and tells us to sit down. It feels a little weird to be having breakfast with her without Cricket here, but I sit down and pour myself a glass of orange juice.
"Thanks!" I tell her sincerely. "This is awesome. Cas said you need us to help you plant something for, uh, what was it again?"
Aurora stares at me with her hand hovering over a kettle of tea. She looks around at us. "Has Cricket not told you about Mabon?"
At the same time Cas and I say no, Hollis responds, "Yes! She said she asked if we can go with her to the coven gathering. Do you really think that's okay?"
"Coven gathering?" I ask, too thrown to care that my mouth is completely full.
"What did she tell you about Mabon and covens?" Aurora asks.
"She said coven meetings were an excuse for witches to get together to talk about their magic and share their energy. She said Mabon marks the Autumn Equinox, and you're supposed to show how thankful you are for everything over the past year," Hollis says.
Aurora sighs and pinches the bridge of her nose. Harold flies over and perches on her shoulder, which creeps me out. Why is it so different from how I feel when I see Stella?
"Sometimes I forget how young and inexperienced Cricket is. Her power is so strong. I don't think she fully realizes everything that entails," Aurora says.
I stop chewing, and I force myself to stay quiet. I know she's not trying to insult Cricket, but I still feel extremely defensive of her. I also have to remind myself that Aurora doesn't have any kids. She expects Cricket to act like an adult, which is why she has so much freedom to fuck around with us all the time.
"Mabon is indeed the celebration of the Autumn Equinox. Toward the end of September, all the witches and covens in the area will gather together. This is an extremely important event for Cricket, as she'll have just turned eighteen and fully come into her powers. It will be like a coming out for her, and a chance for her to demonstrate her powers to the community of witches."
Aurora drones on about the history and importance of Mabon, but her voice is so melodic that I tune her out and focus on my breakfast instead. I feel like I'm in school, and it's really difficult for me to concentrate on what she's saying. It's not that I'm not interested. The idea of seeing Cricket show up a bunch of other witches sounds pretty fun, and I'm excited for her.
When thereâs a pause in conversation, I look up to find Auroraâs piercing gaze trained on me. I force myself not to glance at Harold, even though I can feel his creepy eyes watching me.
